Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley

Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley’s site-specific work (I CAN’T GIVE UP UNLESS YOU DO, 2025) centers black trans experiences, challenging the social landscape in which we live. Taking full possession of the exhibition space, assigning it the coordinates of a world inhabited by monsters, visions and tensions, Brathwaite-Shirley authors a reactionary sketchbook, directly responding to recent anti-trans legislation and rise of right-wing agendas worldwide. The viewer is directly implicated, invited to leave a position of passivity and to act critically in the reading and experience of the images and their narrative. In the artist’s work, lived experience and speculative fiction contribute to the construction of a sort of ever-growing archive on the lives of people who are marginalized and excluded. Physical and digital spaces are explored without qualms or reticence, in search of the contradictions and contrasts that run through them, in an attempt to outline new forms of community and interrelation.
