Screaming Humans (2018–2025) is a performance Balula has developed over several years and in various places, now adapted specifically for this exhibition. It serves as a thread running through the space, marking its flow through a recurring, synchronized act. The scream erupts suddenly, collective and impossible to ignore. It moves through different bodies and seems to carry a shared charge. It feels as if a single emotion, whether pain, joy, or something harder to describe, has surfaced across many people at once. The scream resounds, unsettling at first, then gradually folds into the rhythm of the exhibition. It marks time, like a signal echoing within a larger system of connections. In this context the artist also offers a cocktail, specifically conceived for the occasion and pulled from his Cocktail Series, made from fermented nettles and other wild invasive plants gathered around the city of Rome. These plants, often overlooked or removed, persist through the seasons and return again and again, woven into the fabric of the local landscape. Each carries distinct properties, whether purifying, sharp, or medicinal, and together form a drink that evokes a quiet force, reflecting the exhibition’s deeper themes of persistence, renewal, and the complex ties between individual experience and the shared environments we inhabit.
