Lily McMenamy

In her performance A Hole is a Hole, artist Lily McMenamy explores the metamorphoses of personal identity by examining the multiple articulations of the self and questioning the boundaries between artist and muse, as well as the constructs of beauty and femininity. Skillfully and fluidly employing the codes of avant-garde theater, mime, clowning, and performance art, McMenamy disarticulates her voice and body in a deconstructive process with no escape route, to reflect on her own experiences and find the meaning of her personal and artistic journey. The “hole” of the title, positioned in full view at the center of the performer’s body, is at once physical, visceral, carnal and also intensely metaphorical: a painful but necessary gash granting access to the most hidden folds of the subconscious.
