Mark Leckey
The euphoric energy of countercultures, the evolution of fashion, music and dance as shared social languages, as well as the spontaneity of youth rituals from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, are at the heart of Mark Leckey’s iconic movie Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999). The artist, by subjecting original video material to complex experimental editing, conveys the relentless urge of a collective phenomenon that escapes any codification. Combining video footage from dance clubs with an amalgamation of ambient sounds, the artist brings to light countercultural nightlife, showing the vibrant interpersonal energy among the partygoers and the dreams and aspirations of its revelers.
