Nora Turato
Nora Turato’s work navigates the complexities and contradictions of contemporary culture, drawing on the rapidly evolving codes and speech shaped by today’s zeitgeist. At the core of her practice is expression and communication—emphasized for their inherent bias and instability. She reinterprets and reshuffles language to expose the growing cacophony of modern communication. Words, phrases, fragments, and quotes from popular culture, advertising, literature, text message exchanges, and her own writing are woven into narratives across a range of media: posters, prints, videos, artist’s books, installations, and most notably, the scripts for her monologue-like performances, which form the foundation of her practice. The artist’s voice thus becomes a performative tool that formally channels expressions, our modes of communication. For the work LET THERE BE MOTHER, MOTHERFUCKERS! (2025) presented at BAAB, Turato’s new audio installation places emphasis rather on non-verbal gesture, foregoing the scripted. Moving between deep sighs and accelerated breathing, the work explores the contrasting energies of anxiety, calm, and ecstasy—using only her body to express these shifting emotional states.
