Than Hussein Clark

For the Basement Art Assembly Biennial, Than Hussein Clark continues his investigations of contemporary forms of queer identity formation with a new suite of embroidered director’s chairs made to help facilitate the exhibition’s public program. Director’s Chairs, often detailed with the names of members of the film crew or production company, here, however, become the surface for a set of stuttering and sibilant incantations constructed from fragments in English and French song lyrics, invitations to infamous costume balls, and aristocratic titles, as well as the continued repetition of the name Ryan Murphy—the American television producer famous for his camp re-stagings of both celebrated queer icons and tragedies of recent queer life.
