Valentin Noujaïm

Valentin Noujaïm’s movie Pacific Club (2023), the first part of a trilogy about the Parisian financial district of La Défense, a true silent character in the story, outlines the history of the nightclub of the same name, a well-known hangout since the late 1970s for descendants of the Arab diaspora from the suburbs of the French capital. A place of both refuge and identity construction, the club, portrayed through the intimate story of an individual intertwined with creative formal solutions, becomes the portal to understand the path of a diverse group of individuals, united by the experience of social and cultural marginalization and by the pursuit for a parallel world made of music, dance, get-together. A community that demands a space of legitimacy and recognition in a hostile and snubbing urban fabric, the mirror of a society marked by the dynamics of power, domination and exclusion.
